Hystory of Baile Herculane Spa - accomodation
The existence of the baths in The Herculane resort dates back since times out of mind. Human existence in these places is certified by numerous archaeological discoveries. The stones tools and weapons found during the diggings on the archaeological site „The Outlaws Grotto“, and in other places, as well as pottery relics reveal the fact that primitive civilisation in this part of our country.
The names included in the inscription belong to five remarkable citizens in Dacia, sent to Rome as reprezentatives of the province, take part in tehe ceremonye of appointing M. Sedatius Severianus as consul in 153 ad.
The unintrerupted use of the baths by the romans was first and foremost facilitated by the efficiency of thermal springs.
1718 marks the beginning of the modern spa;
1767, the Frontier Romanian Regiment is created and the local soldiers are the modern builders of the spa;
The 2nd reconstruction of the spa begins after 1800;
1847, the statue of Hercules is settled here (bronze, work of Romelmayer and Glants in Vienna) - Franz Josef pays a visit and declares: "here we have, on the Valley of Cerna, the most beautiful spa in the continent";
1872, 2nd scientific excursion of the Austrian doctors and naturalists;
1884, 1887, 1890, 1892, 1896, visits of Franz Josef and his charming wife, Elisabeth who kindly writes her impressions on the spa;
1918, the strong national movements in order to participate to the Romanian unity making (1st December 1918);
Gen. Nicolae Cena becomes the first Romanian manager of the spa and initiates the local museum (1922);
1932, the Domogled natural reservation is organized here;
1970, the modern part of the spa (Park Vicol) and town building.
Location
The balnear-city Baile Herculane is posted in south-west of Romania, at the crossing of the 450 52I N parallel with 230 52I E meridian, in the same position with Venice and Nice.
The city is on the board of the Cerna river, into a corridor separating the Godeanu Mountains and the Cernei Mountains from the Valcanului Mountains and the Mehedinti Mountains. Altitude is only 168 m but you can get a fraish air like at 3000 m.
Acces
By road: The spa is 5 km far from the National Road DN 6 (E 70), which links the western part of the country to Bucharest;
By train: Herculane rail station on the international railway Bucharest-Timisoara-Budapest;
By plane: The nearest airports: Caransebes (80 km), Craiova (160 km) and Timisoara international airport (170 km). The closest important town is Drobeta-Turnu-Severin (47 km).
Climate
The geographic location of the Cerna basin shows that it, together with the whole western part of the territory of the country, is predominantly subject to the influence of the west and south-west atmospheric circulation. - the medium temperature is 10,5 0C.
Accommodating capacities
- over 5.000 places in hotels
- 800 places in the detached houses in the historical center, recently renovated.
Almoust from them have the own treatement base.
In Baile Herculane and on Cerna's Valley there is a number of agroturistic guest-houses.
Balnear
Mineral water suplies:
At present, 16 natural springs wait thermal mineral water, scattered along the Cerna for about 4 km, are known in the neighbourhoud of the resort Baile Herculane. In the late decades 9 hidro-geological drillings have been performed in order to obtain important flow increases. The present-day thermal-mineral water supply the resort as in store is of 4.000 m3/24 h, that offers - due to their physical-chemical properties - various possibilities of balneary treatment. The artesian spring Maria (Neptun today): 54 0C, Elisabet (Diana today): 55 0C, Hebe: 41 0C, Ileana (Apollo 1 today): 46 0C, Iosif: 54 0C, Neptun 3: 54 0C, Hercules: 67 0C, Hygeea: 48 0C.
Natural air – ionization:
2.000-2.500 negative air-ions/cm3/s. Air-ions can act on the organism in two ways:
- entering the lungs together with the in-coming air
- by direct action on the skin
Negativ ions increase the resistance of the body to catching disease.
