Ecotourism is a form of tourism in which the main motivation for the tourist is the observation and appreciation of nature and local tradition in natural areas, and which must fulfil the following conditions:
contributes to nature conservation and protection;
supports the well being of local people, stressing local ownership, as well as business opportunities for local people (especially in rural areas);
has an educational component that creates awareness about nature conservation, both for tourists and local communities;
requires the lowest possible negative impact on the environment and on the socio-cultural component.
ECOTOURISM PRINCIPLES
The following principles are agreed upon and promoted by the Association of Ecotourism in Romania (AER), based on two international models: Nature and Ecotourism Accreditation Program, developed by the Ecotourism Association in Australia, and Nature’s Best, the certification system of the Ecotourism Association in Sweden. In the approach of AER, these principles should be put into practice by those who offer ecotourism products as well as by those who plan the ecotourism-based development of an area.
1. Focus on the Natural Area
Ecotourism relies on the direct and personal experience of nature, namely to experience the biological, physical and cultural features of a natural area. Therefore the focus on the natural area is essential in the planning, development and marketing of ecotourism.
2. Interpretation and Education
Ecotourism provides both the tourists and the local community with nature related experience opportunities leading to greater understanding, appreciation and enjoyment in discovering and contributing to the conservation of both nature, and the local traditional culture. The ecotourism products attract those tourists who wish to interact with nature and in varying degrees intend to enlarge their knowledge, awareness, appreciation and enjoyment of it.
Those who develop or co-ordinate ecotourism activities should provide the right level of interpretation about the natural and cultural values in the visited areas, by employing appropriately qualified guides and providing correct information prior to and during the experience. The level and type of the interpretation should be so planned, designed and provided as to meet the interest, needs and expectation of the customer, with the inclusion of a large range of both personal and non-personal interpretation opportunities.
It is also important, that the destinations and ecotourism products should give the people in the local community opportunities to access the information and interpretation provided by the ecotourism programme developed in the area.
3. The principle of environmental sustainability
Ecotourism activities and their planning should offer the best practice in tourism and planning with regard to nature conservation and sustainable development. The tourist activity should be so planned and developed as to minimise the impact on nature. The tourist product is so developed and managed as to emphasise the natural and cultural environment through the recognition and application of sustainable tourism practices.
4. Contribution to nature conservation
Ecotourism positively contributes to the conservation of natural areas. Ecotourism implies the participation to the conservation of the natural areas visited, providing effective opportunities for the good management and conservation of such areas (i.e.: financial support in the rehabilitation of those areas negatively affected by the tourism, collection of the waste left by the tourists, contribution to the conservation organisations).
5. Active contribution to the development of the local communities
Ecotourism provides sustainable contributions to the development of the local communities. More often than not, the local community represents an integral part of the ecotourism product. The advantages of the ecotourism should be shared with the local communities. Local benefits may come from the employment of the local guides, the purchase of local goods and services and the use of the local facilities. Ecotourism activities and planning should ensure a minimisation of the negative impact on the local community visited and on the life style, providing, at the same time, long-term active contribution to these communities. Thus, ecotourism should also focus on the cultural aspect of the area visited and contribute to the conservation of this aspect.
6. Tourist Satisfaction
Ecotourism meets the tourist expectations. In developing ecotourism products consideration should be given to the fact that, generally speaking, the potential customers in this field have a high level of education and expectations. Therefore the tourist satisfaction is essential and the experience should meet or exceed the customer expectations.
